Sleep Apnea Treatment

We’ll Help You Get the Sleep You Need

At Adair and Adams Dental Arts, of course we’re concerned about your dental health. But since we think of our patients as friends, we’re also concerned about your overall well-being. If you wake up every day feeling exhausted, that’s cause for concern. If your lack of quality rest is caused by sleep apnea, we can help.

Sleep apnea is caused when your breathing pauses while you sleep. Often this disruption is caused when your tongue rests in the back of your throat. If your tongue settles too far back, it may block your airway and cause a response similar to choking. These incidents may occur many times during the night, leaving you drained the next day. If not treated, severe sleep apnea can lead to heart problems, strokes, and death.

Sleep apnea can be tough to diagnose. Feeling tired is a common symptom of many issues, including a jam-packed schedule, so a doctor may not diagnose sleep apnea during a regular check-up. There’s no blood test that will give you quick and easy answers. But if you think you may be suffering from sleep apnea, we suggest an at-home sleep study.

We’ll provide you with a portable monitor to use while you sleep. The monitor will give us statistics on the oxygen in your blood, your heart rate, air taken in through your nose, and chest movements. These numbers will help us determine whether you may be suffering from sleep apnea.

Once we determine that sleep apnea caused by a blocked airway is responsible for your lack of energy, we can prescribe a SomnoDent or Thornton Adjustable Positioner (TAP) appliance. Similar to a mouthguard, these devices adjust the resting position of your mouth. Both offer a painless, non-invasive way to clear your airway. Don’t lose sleep over which option to choose. We’ll work together, assessing your needs for a decent night’s sleep.
